This week I watched the Jeff Hopkins ted talk where he proposed a more broad way of learning through high level competencies like critical thinking, mathematical thinking, creative thinking, etc. He talked about the difference between knowing about and knowing, and how he believes inquiry is the secret to truly know something.
I think this approach to learning could be very beneficial for me, and for others as well. I naturally inquire about topics that are common in my life, such as basketball, sports media, and the people around me. People who know me best would say that I ask a lot of questions. I like to understand things fully, and when I don’t, I ask.
During the talk, Jeff asked listeners to think of a time they truly knew something, not just knew about. I found this question interesting, and the two main things I could think of were basketball, some school subjects, and sports media. I realized this ties back to me asking questions about these topics. These are areas where I have spent a lot of time and have genuine interest, witch has led me to question, and learn. This question helped me see inquiry driven learning has had a impact in my life without even knowing.
