For this post, I took a trip back to my OG system, DaVinci. I made an edit in DaVinci that I have posted here to the left so I could remind myself what I like vs what I don’t like. This edit took me roughly 4 hours to complete

Positive premiere feature:

The main thing I missed after going back to Davinci is the Timeline Zoom. In premiere, you can zoom in and out of your timeline so easily, while in DaVinci it feels very slow comparative. It feels like premiere is built for speed in this area and DaVinci is not. That being said, DaVinci is free and Premiere is not.

I had a few frustrations with Premiere but I think the overall software is more complicated, plus I’m not used to it. I think Premiere’s software seems extremely complicated at first but once diving into it, it would get better. The main frustration like I mentioned in my last post was bringing a transparent snapchat from strava in. The opacity was weirdly low, and it looked odd. The second difference I noticed is the color. DaVinci is known as the #1 color grading software in the editing world, but once switching back I realized just how nice it is. Color grading in DaVinci is 100% nicer then in Premiere, this is a big upside to DaVinci.

Stabilization:

One thing I have noticed that Davinci struggles with is stabilizing clips, I often have issues stabilizing clips that where other editors don’t. Some people online say the opposite, so this could just be my opinion.

Cost:

When it comes down to cost, Davinci is the clear winner because it’s free. Although for me this isn’t entirely true, me and my media team all use photoshop to edit pictures, and this is included in the overall premiere subscription. This means using premiere would actually benefit me personally in terms of money because I would get more for my money.

For my next post I will get input from some of the top editors in BC to get their perspective on the “best software there is”. I’m super excited to compare some of the top editors’ responses to see what they think.
